— Apoterra Skincare Review —
I love being given the opportunity to review products which are crafted by companies like Apoterra Skincare (formerly Caru Skincare Co). This brand really represents everything that I love about natural skincare.
The name, Apoterra, means “derived from the earth” and they offer a lovely range of natural and sustainable skincare products which are 100% handmade, with love, by the founder, Dominique, and her team, in her small New York City production studio.
Since our launch in 2012, our products have been featured in publications such as Vogue, Time Out NY, Allure, Forbes.com and Lucky. Elle magazine listed one of our serums as one of the top 33 most effective natural products on the planet in 2015.
Apoterra Skincare source their ingredients from fresh, sustainable sources and they do their best to buy from small farms, distilleries, and cooperatives where possible. The merits of each of the ingredients included in the entire range are discussed here.
The products are also color coded to help you figure out which ones are suitable for your skin’s individual needs.
I really love this feature because there’s nothing worse than buying a product which looks and sounds awesome, giving you such high expectations, only to find that it causes a breakout or dries out your skin.
Often the cause is simply that the product doesn’t suit your skin’s current needs. I see this happening all the time and its so frustrating. Many people simply don’t know how to choose skincare according to their individual needs. We also need to keep in mind that our skin often changes throughout the seasons so we should frequently reassess our skin’s needs. (When I was younger, I just went for the prettiest looking bottle and my skin paid for it!)
Apoterra takes the work out of trying to figure all this out. They match their products to your skin’s current needs with a simple color coding system… brilliant. To help you figure out which products are right for you, Apoterra shows you how to choose products here.
Dry/Mature… for skin that tends to be dry, thin and/or my have redness.
My skin definitely falls into this category, so Dominique sent me these two products: Night Regenerative Balm with prickly pear + vitamin C (USD$45) and the Rose Hydrating Toner with Hyaluronic Acid + Rooibos (USD$38).
Night Regenerative Balm with prickly pear + vitamin C (USD$45)
[accordion title=”Ingredients“]Butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter*, Theobroma grandiflorum (cupuacu) seed butter, Rosa canina (rosehip) oil*, Oenothera biennis (evening primrose) oil*, Simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) oil* infused with Matricaria recutita (chamomile)*, Calendula officinalis*, and Symphytum officinale (comfrey)*. Punica granatum (pomegranate) oil, Cucurbita pepo (pumpkin) seed oil*, Hippophae rhamnoides (sea buckthorn) oil*, Opuntia ficus indica (prickly pear) seed oil*, Cera flava (beeswax)*, Ubiquinone (CoQ10), Sambucus nigra (elderberry) fruit extract, tocopherols (non-GMO vitamin E)*, Ascorbyl palmitate FCC (vitamin C), Calendula officinalis CO2 extract, Jasminum grandiflorum (jasmine) extract, Curcuma longa (turmeric) extract*, Helichrysum italicum (immortelle) essential oil, regenerative essential oil blend* *certified organic[/accordion]
This beautiful night balm is jam packed with some of the most gorgeous ingredients, designed to regenerate your skin, in particular: rosehip, evening primrose, pomegranate, sea buckthorn and prickly pear… just to name a few! It also contains one of my favorite essential oils, Helichrysum italicum (Immortelle).
The balm has a thick, grainy consistency. It also has a yellowish/orange hue which is most likely due to the beta-carotene content in the rosehip oil. It does leave a temporary yellowish tint on the skin after application, but this is completely gone by morning. Let it settle in for a few moments before lying your head down to rest on your pillow. I really loved how it felt on my skin. So thick and hydrating.
Rose Hydrating Toner with Hyaluronic Acid + Rooibos (USD$38)
[accordion title=”Ingredients“]distillates of Rosa damascena (rose)*, Pelargonium spp. (geranium)*, Cistus Ladaniferus (rock rose)* and Boswellia carterii (Frankincense)∆. Aspalathus linearis (rooibos) leaf* and Water (Aqua)*, Aloe barbadensis leaf*, Sodium hyaluronic acid, niacinamide (vitamin B3), Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate *certified organic ∆wildcrafted[/accordion]
I was really surprised by the Rose Hydrating Toner. It has an interesting gel consistency, which is unusual but felt really good on my skin. The toner is designed to give you deep cellular hydration. This means it goes beyond the surface area and dives deep down to where it matters – at the cellular level – in order to work its magic. Awesome.
The benefits of Hyaluronic Acid – the star ingredient…
Hyaluronic Acid is one of those ingredients which sounds the least “natural” (when I first came across it in another product, I remember thinking it couldn’t possibly be good for me!).
It turns out that Hyaluronic Acid is naturally found in the human body and is a great exception to the rule “if you can’t pronounce it or don’t recognize it, then don’t put it on your skin.”
It is truly amazing – a great ingredient to include in your beauty routine if you are currently experiencing dehydrated, dry and/or dull skin.
Apoterra explains beautifully on the bottle:
Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the human body and is a cell-communicating ingredient that boosts the skin’s moisture content while reducing inflammation. Combined with beautifying rose and clarifying rooibos, this toner provides deep cellular hydration, keeps dull dry skin at bay and promoting a clear, healthy and smooth complexion.
The packaging is beautiful…
Our mission also transcends to our packaging. We use dark glass which best preserves our botanical potions and it is also the friendliest to our ecosystem. We print our labels on eco-friendly paper and reuse packaging materials when we can.
Batch # offers a level of transparency that sets them apart….
Perhaps Apoterra’s greatest feature is their transparency. You can go on to their website and check the batch number (which is stamped on the product packaging) to find out the date of production – for the exact product you have in your hands – as well as where each of the ingredients have been sourced and their respective qualifications (i.e. whether organic, certified organic, kosher, sustainable etc.). I’ve never come across this system before and I just love it. You can literally see that this company has nothing to hide and is, in fact, proud of everything that goes on behind the scenes.
